STRABAG UK Building Project Highlights
Explore some of the building projects we've completed as part of innovative STRABAG UK projects, delivered efficiently, safely, and to the highest industry standards.
Vertical Build
STRABAG UK has demonstrated our exceptional vertical build capabilities on a range of our UK projects, including at the Woodsmith Project, where STRABAG UK is constructing the world’s longest conveyor tunnel, and the Hartlepool Advanced Manufacturing Facility.-
Steel cage manufacturing unit
The Woodsmith Project steel cage manufacturing unit is a prefabricated steel portal-frame structure spanning 41,000 sq ft. The unit was disassembled from a project in Austria, shipped to the UK, and reconstructed on-site.
The facility houses a robot-assisted production line that manufactures ladders and meshes for the steel cages used in precast concrete segments.
Using a pre-fabricated unit reduced the management and coordination of multiple suppliers, with our specialist engineers ensuring compliance with strict manufacturing tolerances using 3D controls throughout the process.
The unit was fitted out to CAT B standards. -
Concrete segment manufacturing unit
Covering 43,800 sq ft, the Woodsmith Project concrete segment manufacturing unit is designed for manufacturing concrete segments and houses an automated carousel system with a main production line, concrete cabin, curing chamber, and storage area.
Once complete, the precast concrete segments are loaded onto a tunnel boring machine, which uses them to form rings lining the tunnel as it advances.
The unit was fitted out to CAT B standards. -
Headhouse construction
The Woodsmith Project required two 380m-deep intermediate shafts at Lockwood Beck and Ladycross. Each shaft required a headhouse, a traditional steel-framed structure built above ground, to house machinery and equipment for the hoisting system. These headhouses enable personnel and materials to move between the surface and underground mine sections.
The Lockwood Beck headhouse spans 15,000 sq ft, while the Ladycross headhouse covers 11,000 sq ft.
Additional auxiliary buildings, constructed with concrete slabs and lightweight steel frames, serve as mechanical and electrical workshops and storage facilities. -
Hartlepool Advanced Manufacturing Facility
STRABAG UK repurposed a 45,000m2 former oil rig fabrication site into a state-of-the-art advanced manufacturing facility.
Works included extending the existing structure to incorporate 8,600 sq ft of office space and 10,700 sq ft of welfare facilities, along with 129,000 sq ft of internal factory fit-out.
The development features sustainable transport solutions, utilising rail and port infrastructure to reduce carbon emissions during delivery.

Earthworks, Civils, and Infrastructure Works - Woodsmith Project
STRABAG delivered comprehensive earthworks, civils, and infrastructure works for the Woodsmith Project, enhancing site accessibility and supporting ongoing operations.
The project encompassed management of 512,000m³ excavation volume with a 6m diameter cut, sustainable reuse of 300,000m³ of mudstone as fill material, and construction of extensive water management infrastructure, including settlement ponds and treatment plants.
Works also included the creation of primary access roads with an integrated 500-space car park featuring EV charging ports and the development of a new junction with a right-hand turn bay on the A171.
This project demonstrates STRABAG's ability to integrate complex infrastructure elements while maintaining environmental compliance and supporting long-term operational efficiency.
