Ground freezing is a sustainable method based on low-impact drilling methods. Utilising benign salt water as a cooling fluid in a closed-loop freeze pipe system, the process turns groundwater to ice to create a frozen wall around an excavation area. The waterproof enclosure can then remain in place until after excavation works have been completed and permanent basement walls are constructed.

Sizewell C is a new 3.2GW nuclear power station being built on the Suffolk coast. One of the biggest clean energy projects in Britain, Sizewell C will provide low-carbon electricity to six million homes for at least 60 years and save nine million tonnes of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere annually.

After triggering its Development Consent Order in January 2024 and obtaining a Nuclear Site Licence in May 2024, Sizewell C is making significant progress. A British project, which is mainly owned by the UK government, will support thousands of jobs across the UK, create 1,500 apprenticeships, and deliver over 70% of its construction value to British suppliers.

The contract for the trial builds on the ongoing success of STRABAG in the UK, replicating the successes of the Group’s extensive experience in mainland Europe and across the world in providing end-to-end capability services (finance, design, construction, and fit out) in the built environment.

STRABAG UK has experience on a number of major infrastructure projects across the UK including the London tunnels section of HS2, the Woodsmith project for Anglo American in North Yorkshire, and an exploratory tunnel for a new pumped hydro storage scheme for SSE Renewables in Scotland.

STRABAG’s ground engineering specialist division, ZÜBLIN, has established a permanent market presence in the UK since 2015. It has worked on several major infrastructure and civil engineering schemes, including ground freezing at the Silvertown Tunnel project in East London.
