The STRABAG Group, developed from the Austrian company ILBAU and its namesake STRABAG, operates in over 50 countries around the world

Our story

Since 1835, the company has grown into one of Europe’s largest construction groups, through acquisitions and our extensive expertise and excellence.   

1835
Foundation of the family craft business Anton Lerchbaumer in Spittal/Drau, Austria.
1972
Conversion of ‘Baumeister Isola & Lerchbaumer KG’ into ILBAU-Aktiengesellschaft.
1997
Austrian ILBAU / Bau Holding AG acquires German STRABAG Bau-AG, Cologne
2000
The group begins to operate throughout Europe as the core brand STRABAG, and the ILBAU brand is discontinued.
2005
STRABAG takes over Ed. Züblin AG, Stuttgart 
2011
STRABAG first begins working in the UK market. 
2017
STRABAG UK secures its first major contract in a joint venture delivering the London Tunnels and Approaches section of HS2.
2018
STRABAG UK signs its first tunnelling project as a single contractor at the Woodsmith Project in North Yorkshire, providing 37km of mineral transfer tunnels and associated infrastructure.
2022
The STRABAG Group adopts an ambitious sustainability strategy and commits itself to being climate-neutral along the entire value chain by 2040 as part of the promise to ‘Work on Progress’. 
July 2023
The STRABAG UK Advanced Manufacturing Facility is opened in Hartlepool, north-east England. 
September 2023
STRABAG UK establishes a building unit based in Solihull, near Birmingham.
August 2024
STRABAG UK completes the Coire Glas Exploratory Works on the site of a proposed large-scale pumped hydro storage scheme.
January 2025
STRABAG UK becomes the 12th registered Division of the STRABAG Group.
