Environmental sustainability
Experts in the field
Our STRABAG UK Environment & Sustainability team is comprised of experts with specialised knowledge crucial to the further development of sustainable construction. Our extensive team includes experts in hydrology, hydrogeology, waste & water management, environmental nuisance management, water & air quality, carbon and energy management, environmental management, and biodiversity.
This diverse expertise drives effective environmental stewardship, emission reduction, and enhanced project efficiency. By integrating sustainability at every project stage, we ensure compliance and deliver impactful, lasting outcomes across the UK.
We are actively tackling the two primary challenges of climate and nature together, not only through our delivery approach but also through integrating these considerations in client solutions.

Design phase
- We prioritise low-carbon materials, incorporating recycled and sustainable options to reduce direct and indirect carbon emissions throughout our value chain.
- Our designs embrace circular economy principles, reduce material waste, and ensure that components can be reused or repurposed at the end of their lifecycle.
- Energy efficiency is at the core of our designs. We embed energy-efficient solutions like passive solar design, advanced insulation, and renewable energy systems, which contribute to lowering the operational carbon footprint of the project once completed.

Construction and supply phase
- We are actively working to improve sustainable construction practices through the application of low-emission fuels, on-site renewable generation, biodiversity enhancement, and resource-efficient and optimised engineering solutions.
- Our efficient logistics and material management strategies minimise transportation and create a beneficial reuse for waste.
- We are committed to developing our digital maturity, applying the principles to facilitate advanced manufacturing of construction materials, BIM, and LEAN methods - reducing resource use, promoting circularity, and providing sustainable solutions for our clients.
- We have an ISO 20400-aligned sustainable procurement management process, facilitating effective partnerships with our supply chain, with sustainability as a common goal.
- We apply ISO 14001, ISO 50001, and PAS 2080 standards across our projects to establish a standardised approach for effective management and continuous improvement.

Operational and maintenance phase
- We consider asset lifespan, operational requirements, and maintenance when designing and delivering our construction projects. We ensure the optimisation of energy efficiency, operational management, and maintenance throughout our work.
